Our materials
There’s a lot of terminology in jewellery, and our products use a lot of beautiful metals and materials. Here’s an explainer of the metals and gemstones in our jewellery.
All our metals are tarnish-resistant and hypoallergenic, thanks to the protective e-coating we add to our jewellery - except the gold-filled which doesn’t need it.
Whilst most items can withstand a little splash or water here and there, try to avoid bathing whilst wearing the jewellery to keep it in great condition.
Lead and nickel free
You’ll never find lead or nickel in our jewellery, which are metals that commonly cause allergic reactions. It will never feature in anything from our store.
Our metals
18ct gold filled
The most durable our of options, 5% of the item’s weight is gold, which has been chemically bonded in a thick layer to the base metal (brass or copper). It doesn’t need any protective coating, and it’s super durable for everyday use.
18ct gold vermeil (pronounced ver-may)
With at least 2.5 microns of 18ct gold plating over a base metal (often 925 Sterling Silver at Sophelia), gold vermeil is an affordable way to get the gold look. The finish is five times thicker than normal gold plating, and very durable.
18ct gold plated sterling silver
A layer of 18ct gold is applied over 925 Sterling Silver, combining the strength and durability of sterling silver with the warm, rich colour of 18ct gold. The sterling silver base provides a higher-quality foundation compared with other base metals, while the gold plating delivers a classic yellow-gold tone and smooth finish.
18ct gold plated brass
A layer of 18ct gold is applied over a brass base, creating a warm yellow-gold colour and polished finish. Brass provides a strong, durable base for jewellery, while the 18ct gold plating gives the piece the appearance and tone of gold at a more accessible price point.
18ct gold plated stainless steel
The most durable of our jewellery options, this is 925 stainless steel which has been plated with 18ct gold. It’s then PVD plated, giving an ultra-durable, tarnish-resistant finish. A perfect material for everyday jewellery - it’s created by vapourising a metal (like gold or titanium) and vacuum bonding it to the stainless steel at a molecular level.
925 Sterling Silver with rhodium plating
Traditional sterling silver can tarnish, but we rhodium plate our to make it tarnish resistant. This gives it a bright, reflective white gold appearance, and significantly reduces scratching and tarnishing, All our 925 Sterling silver is hallmarked and hypoallergenic.
Silver plated stainless steel
A layer of silver is applied over a stainless steel base, creating a bright, polished finish with the classic look of silver. The stainless steel core provides exceptional strength and durability, while the silver plating delivers an elegant appearance at an accessible price point.
Where the item is rose gold, it’s the same plating process, just with rose gold.
Our stones
We use a combination of natural and lab created stones to create our beautiful jewellery. Read on to understand more about the materials we use.
Pearls
Our freshwater, cultured pearls provide that added bit of organic flow to each piece.
Moissanite
Global Gemological Research Association-certified, lab created, brilliantly dazzling stones. The white stones are a great alternative to diamonds, without the price tag. And we’ve got them in a multitude of colours for that added sparkle.
Natural stones
All our opaque stones are natural, which means no two are the same.
Natural quartz
Found in our pendants and some of our bangles and bracelets, this natural stone comes in a range of beautiful colours. As it’s made by nature, there’s some natural variation in the colours.
High-grade cubic zirconia
All our other stones are high-grade cubic zirconia. Known for its sparkle and suitable for everyday wear, we choose stones which are graded at least a 5A (out of 7) for sparkle and brilliance.
1 year warranty
Our jewellery is more than just a beautiful accessory – it’s a symbol of connection, love, and cherished memories shared between people. We’re confident in the quality of our jewellery, so we offer a 1 year warranty from the date of purchase.
This means if you have an issue with your jewellery which is caused by a manufacturing defect (e.g. breaking under normal use), we’ll replace it without fuss. Just email us on support@sophelia.com and we’ll resolve it for you. The warranty doesn’t cover failed repairs attempts, general wear and tear, accidental damage, loss, or neglect.
